Foundation Fundamentals: Poem Perfection

Published: December 07, 2017

GrapeSEED Shared Reading Poems provide girls & boys with a multitude of rich literacy skills. There are 3 GrapeSEED Poems in our early units, and each focuses on 1-2 special letters a piece. Through the Vertical Phonics Approach, students are introduced to the most frequent sounds of a letter. This methodology scaffolds children when they begin to decode unfamiliar words as they become readers and writers. Phonemic awareness and 'Concepts About Print' are the main focus of the Shared Reading Poems as children move through each unit, and the poems are always super engaging, with content that is related to the theme of the current GrapeSEED Unit!

Remember to:

  • Focus on the sound(s) of the letter while using the 'air writing' technique. We want our students to develop a strong connection between the letter shape and the sound(s) associated with the letter.
  •  Review letters (and their sounds) learned in previous units. For example, notice “m” in the poem “Umbrella” when you move onto Unit 2.
  •  Work on 'Concepts About Print' as often as possible.
  • If your students are becoming confident with the poems, try using one as a mentor text and write a different poem as a class or individually. Check in with your Professional Learning Specialist for even more creative ideas!
