In Part 1 of Oral Language and Critical Listening Pieces of the Literacy Puzzle, we talked about how oral language is an important piece missing from many reading and writing programs. We also explained how GrapeSEED - with repeated exposure to songs, stories, chants, big books, poems, and action activities - builds meaning behind the text to help children understand what they are hearing, saying, and reading. PUT WORDS TO A TUNE
GrapeSEED capitalizes on what advertisers have known for years… putting words to a tune helps us remember them. For example, finish this tune--- Give me a break! Give me a break! Break me off _______ ________ _________ __________ __________ _________ _________. In your head you probably heard the tune and could finish the jingle “a piece of that Kit Kat bar.” Students remember words that are put to a tune, and when they can repeat the words, they can surely read them. Music crosses over to both sides of the brain helping children (and adults!) remember. The tune helps move children from “invented reading” to actually tracking print and matching 1 to 1. GrapeSEED builds meaning through the gift of music!
CAREFUL SELECTION OF MATERIALS
GrapeSEED developers have carefully chosen songs, stories, chants, big books, poems, and action activities that will teach correct language patterns. Texts within units have integrated language patterns and vocabulary, and GrapeSEED materials build on and extend patterns as the units progress. GrapeSEED materials help build intonation, fluency, and expression. For example, chants teach children the art of conversation. When we ask a question our voice goes up. That is a signal that someone should answer you. We also want to teach children to answer in complete sentences when they are asked a question.
Children need to get up and move their bodies. GrapeSEED builds in the bodily-kinesthetic modality and at the same time teaches children concepts like position words, following directions, sharing, etc. Following Asher’s Total Physical Response Method (TPR), GrapeSEED uses action activities to keep the children moving, engaged, and having fun, all while building communication skills and meaning at the same time!
HOME SCHOOL CONNECTION
Building the home school connection is so important! We want children to practice at home with the same materials they use in school. Our take home EEE/REP materials include all of the GrapeSEED activities from the classroom lesson in books and on CDs and DVD. They can have fun practicing the language patterns and expressions at home and show their parents what they learned.
